The Kingdom of Great Britain never really owned the United States of America, though it could be said to have owned it from it's inception until 1783.

Although separatism from Britain was at first supported by a minority of the population on Britain's American colonies, the civil war was botched by Britain's intervention, with British forces not understanding the difference between friend and foe. This led to massive support for independence and the United States of America was formed in 1776 by a Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Great Britain capitulated in 1783 and recognised the United States of America as an independent nation.

So, since the 'United States of America' was a concept that Britain refused to recognise until it signed the Treaty of Paris and gave the colonies to the colonists, it can most fairly be stated that it never owned the US.

Do UK and Great Britain have same government?

Not really. Great Britain is not a country, it is an island - one of the two large islands which, together with around 1000 small islands make up The British Isles. As such, Great Britain does not have a government. The island of Great Britain contains England, Wales and Scotland, and these together with a part of the other large island (Northern Ireland) and most of the small islands, make up The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The government of The United Kingdom is the British Parliament in Westminster, London. Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own, regional assemblies with fewer powers than the Westminster government. There is no equivalent separate assembly for England. Because "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" is rather cumbersome, it is often abbreviated to "Britain," "Great Britain," "GB" "The UK" or others but should not be abbreviated as "England."

What colony has Scotland in?

Scotland is not in ANY colony. Scotland is a country/nation in its own rite and is part of the political union called Great Britain or the United Kingdom.

Why is the U.K. also called Britain?

Because people don't know that they are different entities. This is complex..... The country of England consists of England and Wales (Wales was never a country in its own right). Great Britain was formed when an Act of Union united England and Scotland. At that time England ruled Ireland, and later another Act of Union united Great Britain and Ireland in what was then known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Much of Ireland later gained its independence and what was left in the union meant that the name had to be changed to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So, the term The United Kingdom, or 'the UK' includes Ireland and Great Britain or 'Britain' doesn't. However, many people use the terms interchangeably not realising that distinctions involved.
