When a group of people get together to make a quilt together, this is called a quilting bee. When a group of people get together to share, sell and buy quilts and information about quilting, it is called a quilt show.
Many quilting clubs, guilds and women's groups continue to have quilting bees. However, early in the 20th Century, the abundance of inexpensive manufactured blankets and bedspreads made the homemade quilt less of a household essential and more of a treasured heirloom. During and after the Second World War, increasing numbers of women took jobs outside the home and had less time or need to sew their bed coverings themselves. Whereas the quilting bee turned a slow, difficult chore into a social occasion, today the practice of quilting is a hobby and an art form.

The origins of quilting are unknown; quilting has been around for thousands of years. The earliest known depictions of quilting is on an ancient Egyptian statue, dated 3400 B.C.
