Most definitely. Simply had to invade North Vietnam. If the Soviets or Red China intervened; use nuclear weapons against them. Which is why North Vietnam wasn't invaded.
The US didn't invade South Vietnam. The Republic of South Vietnam asked for US help as they couldn't stem the Red Tide (communist infiltration).

The United States never 'occupied' Vietnam. It was invited to send troops to support the government of South Vietnam in its attempts to deal with North Vietnamese aggression.

US POWs still surviving in North Vietnam were released to the US in 1973; the vast majority of them were US Airmen who had been shot down during the air war over North Vietnam.
