In the 1600s
The Puritans began building towns in Massachusetts in 1630. The Puritans were part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. One group came in 1629 and another group came a year later.
The next year, the company name was changed to the Massachusetts Bay Company. In 1630, a much larger group of Puritans came to the settlement. John Winthrop led a group of 1,000 Puritans on 15 ships. John Winthrop became the governor of the Puritan colony.
They landed on Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. They landed there in 1620. Actually more correctly they just landed in Mass. Plymouth Rock was the stone they engraved the year on. They actually didn't land on an inland rock.

There were four New England Colonies. Massachusetts was settled in 1620, Connecticut and Rhode Island in 1636, and New Hampshire in 1638. Vermont was a territory claimed by New Hampshire and New York that established its independence and joined the United States. Maine was a part of Massachusetts that broke off and became a separate state.
