The full story of Perseus in all its detail is culled from numerous sources, and many of the authors seem to have expected the story to be well-known to audiences already. The earliest of these written references were in the (long) poems of Homer and Hesiod, which are dated to around 750 and 700 B.C. respectively. But it seems certain that the stories of Perseus are a good bit older than that.
