You use the S in the serial number to find out when your Fender Mustang Bass Guitar was made. If the serial number starts with S05 it means that is made in the late 70s or early 80s.
1966/67, in Fullerton, California. I have a Fender Mustang bass from that same plant, 1977/78. :)

Roughly 1965 You could also remove the neck, there's a stamp on the heel with the exact date of production

According to Fender, there are no historic serial numbers longer than 6 digits, so this is most likely a modern one: the "12" prefix denotes the guitar was produced in 2012. If a "US" precededes the serial stamp, that also indicates the guitar was made in the US this year.
