The first month of Muslim Calender starts from month of Moharram .

ie. mourning for martyrdom of grandson of Prophet Mohammad Mustafa (saw) Hazrat Imam Husain(as) who was killed and slaughtered without mercy by blocking and not allowing water for his family and relatives and his helpers (including 6 month baby Asghar) for continuous 3 days by 1 lakh army of Yazeed (la) & not giving any drop of water which took place in 61 Hijri in the desrt sandy area of Kerbala .

So the first month starts with sadness and mourning and not with any sort of happiness or enjoyment like other religions observe.
