The Italian explorer Christopher Columbus discovered the US in 1492. Of course, it wasn't called the USA then. Also, there were already people living there.

He never came to the US. At that point the US didn't exist. It was 1492. What Columbus did do was, he discovered Cuba. Hispaniola, and San Salvador. He didn't even make it to Mexico.
Although Columbus is credited with making the European discovery of America, of which the US is a part, he never set foot on land that is part of any state of the US.
Pretty sure it's 1619. I learned it in an AP US History course.
