The ancient Greeks knew of a settlement there. Ptolemy the Egyptian-Greek astronomer and cartographer referred to a settlement called 'Eblana' around the year A.D. 140.

However, the Vikings are credited with founding the large settlement which became a town. They did this in about 841.

Officially the city got a charter in 988.

It wasn't "built" in such a as to be able to put a year on it and say "Dublin was built in XYZ AD." Cities in Europe aren't like that.
