Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805 and his first published works were not his fairy tales. In 1829 he enjoyed considerable success of his first short story "A Journey on Foot from Holmen's Canal to the East Point of Amager". He also published a comedy and a collection of poems that season. His first actual novel was published in 1835, it was titled The Improvisatore, and it became and instant success. He also published his first collection of Fairy Tales in that year.
Its origin is a story by Hans Christian Andersen, called "The Little Sea-Maid." A statue of her is a very famous sight in the harbor of Copenhagen, Denmark, which was Andersen's home. You'll find a link to a picture of it below.

The book was a success, and he followed it with many other volumes of childrens stories, almost one a year, right up until 1872! Because of his wonderful fairy tales, Andersen became known as the greatest writer in Denmark, and one of the most beloved childrens authors in the world. In his lifetime, he wrote more than one hundred and fifty fairy tales, and his stories have been translated into over 100 languages!One of the highest prizes in childrens literature is the Hans Christian Andersen Award, presented to only one author and one illustrator every two years.
