Kangaroo island was discovered and named by sea explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802.
Flinders discovered the island while on his journey to circumnavigate Australia. By the time he and his crew reached the southern shores in March 1802 (having gone in an anti-clockwise direction from Sydney), they had gone without fresh food for four months, living only on salted meats. Upon landing on the island, they found as much fresh food and easy game as they could possibly want, by way of kangaroos. Flinders recorded: 'the whole ship's company was employed this afternoon in the skinning and cleaning of kangaroos' and 'In gratitude for so seasonable a supply, I named this south land KANGAROO ISLAND'.
Although the tiny Musky rat-kangaroo is the smallest species of kangaroo in Australia, it is not the smallest species of kangaroo to be discovered. In 2008, an even smaller species of kangaroo was discovered inhabiting the montane forests of the island of New Guinea. It is a tiny dwarf wallaby of the Dorcopsulus family.
No. Whilst Kangaroo Island was the first region settled in South Australia, it was not discovered first. Kangaroo Island was discovered by Matthew Flinders in 1802. Various early Dutch explorers ventured into South Australia's western coastline during the 1600s. South Australia could be said to have been discovered in 1627, when Thijssen recorded the first observations of the South Australian coast.
The Australian Aborigines knew about Kangaroo Island long before the arrival of Europeans. However, the island was "officially" discovered by sea explorer Matthew Flinders on 2 March 1802, during his circumnavigation and charting of the Australian continent.
