The eastern coast of Australia was first explored by Europeans in 1770, when Lieutenant James Cook (not yet a captain)of the Endeavour charted it. He called the eastern coast "New South Wales", because he thought the hilly landscape looked like the south of Wales.

Originally "New South Wales" referred to the entire eastern half of Australia.
