1944-1945 were execptionally bad for the Japanese because they were being defeated by the allies and their mainland Japan was being heavily bombed. The Japanese people were starving, losing their homes and businesses. The war was essentially over for them but the military leaders perssisted in the fight against the Allies. Once the atom bombs were dropped and the Russians were at their backdoor they finally surrendered. The bombings did horrible things to the Japanese and they suffered the consequences for many decades.
