I'm going to need more information, like the model number to Identify it. Just the serial is alone is not much help. Different models had different serial number's.

Yes. Crosman owns Benjamin. see the link below.
If it's not on the outside then very possibly it's under the grip cover
I believe you are asking about a Crosman model 38T target. they were made from 1964 to 85. Crosman offers a free service to locate shops that repair older air guns. See the link below. Further research indicates it was made in the 7 month (July) of 1981. The first 3 or 4 numbers of the serial number indicate the month and year. 781xxxxxxx
Crosman made the model 130 in two variations the first one had walnut pump and handle 1953-1954. The second version had a metal pump 1955-1970. For a time Crosman did not put serial numbers on original parts. ( I had to do some reading to find this fact out.) Yours may be one of these models. I also own an old Benjamin that has no serial number. Reference Blue book of airguns 7th edition.
Most likely around late 1956 according to Crosman who owns Benjamin.
I don't believe Crosman ever made a model 40 rifle. I have no reverence to any model by that number made by Crosman. However they did make a model 140 from 1954 to 1968 in four variations.
