The year KFC Extra Crispy Chicken was introduced is not clear, with three sources giving three different years. One thing that is certain is it was introduced in the 1970s.

According to the first source, FunTrivia.com, it was introduced in 1974. Details of how it came about were not given.

According to Tasteofhome.com, the Heublein Company bought Kentucky Fried Chicken and wanted to change the recipe. When Colonel Sanders would not allow his name to be associated with changing it, extra crispy chicken was added to the menu (although no exact time table for when it was added was given).

The third year given is 1977. The explanation is:

The answer of 1974 and 1971 are wrong. I should know as I first created the first extra crispy batch quite by accident in 1977 at the age of 17 while working at the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Dover Ohio. My mistake chicken was given away to customers that night and they loved it. My manager (who just happened to be the youngest store manager in the KFC chain) submitted my new type of chicken to the corporate office. They tried it and liked it so much they rolled it out in a few test stores, and it sold like crazy. The rest is history. I was given a .10 cent raise and was (unofficially till I turned 18) promoted by my manager to assistant manager, thus making me the youngest assistant manager at any KFC. Shortly thereafter I graduated high school and moved to Tennessee which ended my KFC career.
