Muhammad's revelations were, at first, oral. They were not written down until some years after his death. After Muhammad's death the Qur'an was compiled under the direction of the first Sunni Caliph Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr entrusted the task to Zaid ibn Thabit, who was a scribe entrusted by the Prophet to write down the Qur'anic verses, as well he had memorised all of the Qur'an by heart. When Zaid completed the task, he handed it over to Abu Bakr who handed it over to Umar whom he nominated his successor when he died a year later.

The compilation of the Qur'an was complete within 2-3 years post Muhammad's death.
