It was made in 1947 by Bell Labs, but it really didn't get into use until Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola produced a usable cell in 1974. This phone was only for government use and in 1984 it was sold to the general public.

The very first cell was made by Bell labs in 1947, but Dr. Cooper of Motorola in 1974 is given credit for the first cell phone. The idea for cell phones dates from the 1920's and the use of police radios. It wasn't until 1984 that cell phones were sold to the public.
