1997-the suicides began on 3/26 and completed on 3/27. They were discovered by a former member (Rio)who received a package from the group and went to the house.
39 men and women took their own lives in response to their belief that they would catch a ride on a spaceship hiding behind the Hale-Bopp comet. However, there were other suicides related to this cult, including my brother, Jimmy, aka Gab-ody. The biography of his life -Closing the Gate-will be published in a few months.
There are several former members who are still alive: Rio, who wrote a book about the group, Sawyer, who runs a Talk Radio blog about their beliefs, two others who continue to operate the group website in support of their beliefs, and some others who participate in the Facebook Heaven's Gate group.
Some of us will never forget this date, because it impacted our lives and families.
