What year was the last major earthquake in California?

Earthquake happen regularly. It is not possible to say where and when they most recent was unless a date is specified.

Here are some;

A recent earthquake was in Haiti at a 7.2 and then another earthquake struck Chile at an 8.8 right after Haiti's earthquake. All in 2010

There are earthquake in Ca all the time everyday.

The most recent earthquakes, on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, occurred in California. Specifically, six were recorded in southern California. Another two were recorded in the nearby Baja California, Mexico. Still another one was recorded in central California. Yet another two were recorded in northern California.

Going up the western coast of the United States of America, another earthquake was recorded off the coast of Oregon. Two more were recorded in Alaska, in the south and on the Alaskan peninsula.

Going westwards from the California coast, and across the Pacific Ocean, an earthquake was recorded in the Samoan Islands. Another was recorded in Mindanao, Philippines. Still another was recorded in northern Qinghai, China.

Returning to the Americas, an earthquake was reported on the Pacific side of South America, at Antofagasta, Chile. Within the Caribbean that separates coastal North and South Americas, an earthquake was reported in the area of the Dominican Republic. Another two were reported in the area of Puerto Rico. Leaving the Caribbean and heading eastwards across the Atlantic, an earthquake was reported in the Azores Islands.
