Since official records began in 1950, the state of New York has recorded tornadoes in every year except for 1950, 1951, and 1953. Even these absences are probably due to incomplete data rather than an actual lack of tornadoes, as most F0 and F1 intensity tornadoes were missed at this point in history.

New York City was hit by known tornadoes in the years 1985, 1990, 1995, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2010 the city was hit by three tornadoes, including two on September 16, one of which was a killer. The strongest tornado to hit the city was an EF2 on August 8, 2007.
