Half dollars were never made of solid silver. It's far too soft to use in a circulating coin. US halves were made of 90% silver and 10% copper up till 1964, and 40% silver from 1965 to 1970. Since then all circulating half dollars have been made of copper-nickel, like dimes and quarters.
Special collectors' half dollars have been struck in silver during other years. Some 1976 Bicentennial halves were made in 40% silver, and since 1992 "Prestige Proof" halves, dimes, and quarters have been struck in the original 90% silver composition.
