Never. They're called nickels for a reason. The only U.S. nickels to contain any silver at all, at 35%, were "war" nickels dated 1942-1945. Nothing before or after was made of silver.

Starting in 1965, US dimes and quarters have been made of a "sandwich" consisting of a pure copper core with outer layers of 75% copper / 25% nickel alloy.Half-dollars dated 1965 to 1969 are made of a silver/copper sandwich giving them an overall 40% silver content. Are pre-1965 nickels pure silver?

Except for special "war nickels" minted from late 1942 to 1945, all US nickels are made of an alloy of 25% nickel and 75% copper.War nickels were made of an alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese because nickel metal was needed for the war effort. They can be identified by a large mint mark letter (P, D, or S) over the dome of Monticello on the back.MoreNo circulating US coins have ever been made of pure silver. It's too soft and the coins would wear out very quickly. If you think about it for a few seconds, nickels are twice the size of dimes which were made of silver. If nickels had been made with a similar percentage of silver they would have been worth 20 cents, not 5 cents.

What years were nickel made of silver?

Canadian Coins called nickels have never been made from silver. Up to 1921 Canada minted silver 5¢ coins that were the same size as old American half-dimes but these weren't called nickels. In 1922 Canada changed its 5¢ coin to be the same size as the US nickel, and these coins carry the same name. However unlike the US coin which is actually 75% copper the majority of Canadian nickels have been made of either pure nickel or plated steel.
