1932-1964 Washington quarters were made of 90% silver and 10% copper. All circulating quarters dated 1965 and later are copper-nickel.

Special 40% silver quarters were made for collectors in 1976 and since 1992, 90% silver ones have been made for Prestige proof sets.

What is the value of a 1949 S Washington quarter?

There were no 1949-S Washington Quarters minted! If you have one it would either be super rare or (most likely) a counterfeit! "The Silver Series of Washington Quarters spans from 1932 to 1964; during many years in the series it will appear that certain mints did not mint Washington Quarters for that year. No known examples of quarters were made in 1933, San Francisco abstained in 1934 and 1949, and stopped after 1955, until it resumed in 1968 by way of making proofs." -Wikipedia K. Then U.S nickels dated 1942-1945 contain a little silver as well. For Canadian quarters, halves, and dollars, those contained silver until 1967 (1968 for dimes).
