Many animals have been filmed using rocks and sticks as tools. One of the most common ways an animal breaks apart hard bits of food or a hard shell is by using a rock as a hammer. Often times they find another rock to place the hard food on and hit with a smaller rock. They seem to have learned what size and kind of rocks to use.
They float on their backs and lay the shell on their chest and hit it with a rock. (I wouldn't call it a prey but their food.)
The shell is hard.
The crust is the outermost layer of the Earth, the shell made up of hard oceanic and continental rocks.
Grasshoppers do not have a hard shell.

they "duck" into their hard shell. this is solid and keeps them safe. from a birds vision, they look like rocks. good natural defence!

The tortoise's shell is their home. The shell has a hard cover and can protect them when something hard hits it. If they do not have the shell, they would have died fast.
