What you do in zen Buddhism?

Some practices are common to all schools of Zen (Obaku, Rinzai and Soto):

  • zazen (meditation)
  • kyo (sutras)
  • samu (work)

The Rinzai school is the only remaining traditional lineage to employ kōan study (anecdotes that usually take the form of a question that cannot be analyzed by the logical mind).

The Soto school emphasizes shikan-taza (just sitting), whereas its founder (Dogen) also advocated kōan practice.

In the last century, new lineages were formed that combine practices from different Zen traditions (like the Sanbo Kyodan and White Plum lineages).
