Whats causes the dash lights in a 1998 Lincoln Navigator to go dim?

My Navigator was doing that too, i later found out it was my alternator, i have a system in there too and it wasnt strong enough, everytime the bass would hit, even with a new battery, the lights would go dim, so i had to buy a stronger alternator, and it hasn't done that since, the stock one produces 100 Volts, if you have a system get aleast a 130 or better
