It's said that capital punishment works as a deterrence (keeps criminals from committing more crimes, since they know they could be killed for it)

The criminal won't be able to commit more crimes even if he escapes

Revenge- They killed someone, so they should be killed

The punishment needs to match the crime

The dead person(s) life is worth just as much a criminal's life.

The Bible is for the death sentence

There are many reasons for the death penalty, and I will answer it with sources so you know I am not lying.

1. It deters crime.

There are many statistics for both sides, but if you research studies prove my point. The rigorous examination of the deterrent effect of capital punishment began with research in the 1970s by Isaac Ehrlich, currently a University of Buffalo Distinguished Professor of Economics. Professor Ehrlich's research found that the death penalty had a strong deterrent effect. While his research was debated by other scholars, additional research by Professor Ehrlich reconfirmed his original findings. In addition, research by Professor Stephen K. Layson of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro strongly reconfirmed Ehrlich's previous findings.[1]

First, each execution, on average, is associated with three fewer murders. The deterred murders included both crimes of passion and murders by intimates. [1]

Second, executions deter the murder of whites and African-Americans. Each execution prevents the murder of one white person, 1.5 African-Americans, and 0.5 persons of other races. [1]

In summary, the recent studies using panel data techniques have confirmed what we learned decades ago: Capital punishment does, in fact, save lives. Each additional execution appears to deter between three and 18 murders. While opponents of capital punishment allege that it is unfairly used against African-Americans, each additional execution deters the murder of 1.5 African-Americans. Further moratoria, commuted sentences, and death row removals appear to increase the incidence of murder. [1]

2. It is cheaper

People that oppose the death penalty claim that it is more expensive, but that is not the case. It costs 50,000 to make a jail cell, and 30,000 to kill a human through the death penalty.

It is not cheaper to keep a criminal confined, because most of the time he will appeal just as much causing as many costs as a convict under death sentence. Being alive and having nothing better to do, he will spend his time in prison conceiving of ever-new habeas corpus petitions, which being unlimited, in effect cannot be rejected as res judicata. The cost is higher. [2]

Even though abolitionists have greatly exaggerated the cost of DP [death penalty] cases, DP cases still prove to be significantly less expensive, over time, than the DP equivalent LWOP [life without parole] cases…The average time on death row, for those executed from 1973-1994, was 8 years...

Using the 8 year average, the DP equivalent LWOP cases are still $1 million more expensive than their DP counterparts ($2 million @ 2% annual increase).

Also, U.S. states that repeal death penalty laws do not see a significant savings in trial costs. [2]

3. For those of us who are christian read this point, if not ignore I said this.

Exodus 21:12-14

"Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death. However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate. But if a man schemes and kills another man deliberately, take him away from my altar and put him to death."

4. It rarely kills innocent people. With new technology if you are found guilty you are almost always actually guilty. About 1% of people on death row are found to be guilty. And since as I stated above, since it deters murder then if one innocent person was killed, then the death penalty of a guilty man would save 2 lives instead of 3. So it rarely kills innocent people. And of those 1% of innocent people many will appeal and then get freed. Since it is an average of 8 years on death row and they appeal often, then most of the 1% will be found not guilty at one point.

5. Gives closure to the victims family.

People affected by crime may never recover. The death penalty may heal the wound or create a path for recovery. If someone killed my family it would help me to see them get punished in that way, and eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

6. Life without parole criminals sometimes get let out because they are pardoned.

I will give you a few examples:

5/1/09 - Illinois governor commutes sentence of mom who killed kids

The new Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has commuted the sentence of Debra Lynn Gindorf, a woman some experts believe was suffering from postpartum depression when she killed her two children more than two decades ago. [3]

11/27/08 - Victim's family protests killer's release

The Michigan governor's approval of freeing a 71-year-old former Warren man who has spent 42 years in prison for killing a man is vigorously opposed by the victim's family and Macomb prosecutors. Dante Ferrazza, who was sentenced to life in prison without a chance for parole in 1967, is scheduled to be released from prison in January 2009 after the governor in October endorsed a recommendation from the Parole Board.

That is all. There are more examples at:

Capital punishment is a controversial subject that has been widely criticized. Death penalty supporters however cite several reasons for capital punishment's main purposes:

-retribution

-deterrence

-prevention of repetitive criminal acts

-encouragement of guilty pleas and confessions

-eugenics

-economy

All of these topics are further detailed in the main wikipedia article for capital punishment, as well as capital punishment debate. As of right now, retribution seems to be the main stance for death penalty advocates.

Is capital punishment good?

Yes,capital punishment is goodbecause it's what criminals have tofaceforcommitting a murder or another offence.

Also it is good because...

1] Criminals deserve to pay the price for what they have done.

2] Yes, it may be quite sad but it just stops any other criminal committing a crime.

3] You choose the safety of your children or the fact that criminals can walk free and do harm to our planet.

4]It works as a deterrence {which if you do not understand} it means it keeps criminals from committing more crime and getting away with it.

5]The punishment should fit the crime he/she commits.

So that's why I think capital punishment is good and that's why you should too.

By the way if you want the shorter version about why capital punishment is good then capital punishment is good because it puts criminals in their place and keeps us safe from murderous people who kill people for no apparent reason.
