BMW's have auto-locks a little different from other cars, if your battery is dead, the doors won't open. To change the battery, you need to open the trunk, this is where the battery is located. You will see a panel with some screws, you need to remove that and underneath is the battery.

In most cars the battery is in front of the engine. In some cars, it is beneath the truck sometimes with the spare tire.
There are rare times on rare old cars this is required. All current North American sold and virtually all European sold cars this is not needed.
Not as easy as in other cars, first diconnect the battery, you then need to either remove or release the bracing bar that is positioned over the top of the battery, don't forget to release the battery clamp at the bottom, remove the battery, not a good idea in minus 25 C.
