HIV-1 is by far the more virulent of the two species of HIV.

Also, HIV-2 has Vpr and Vpx proteins. HIV-1 has only Vpr. Differences between these proteins are actually on research.

Type 1 and Type 2 are caused by two different subtypes of the herpes virus. Type 2 is more likely to recur, and the average is six outbreaks in the first year of infection with Type 2. In contrast, many people with Type 1 cold sores or genital herpes don't get more than one outbreak. There are more people with evidence of prior infection with Type 1 than Type 2.
