Hilary is both a masculine and a feminine personal name. It is English is origin, coming from the medieval form of the Latin masculine name Hilarius (from Latin hilaris, meaning cheerful), and from the feminine form Hilaria.

From the middle ages onward, the name Hilary was used primarily by men in honor of the 4th century theologian St. Hilarius of Poitiers. From the middle 20th century forward it has been more commonly a name given to girls.
