Whats wrong when a 98 dodge neon auto trans jerks when take off and jerks when you let off and when it shifts but does not slip like its racing what is wrong with it and what can you do?

I agree with the fluid and filter change. I just changed the fluid and filter in my 98 and it made a big difference. When I first start my car and put it in reverse, the transmission just idles for a few seconds then slams into gear. Changed the fluid and filter, now she shifts smooth. Make sure you use the correct fluid, ATF+3 or ATF+4. Have the transmission serviced with a complete fluid and filter change. check trans moter mount if it still jerk after changing fluid or try putting stop slip made lucas oil product about $10.00

If the transmission jerks 1st check the level of transmission fluid. To do this place the car in park, Place the parking brake on, Next start engine and pull out the transmission dip stick wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel re-insert the dip stick and check the level if low add transmission fluid to the proper level. Now drive car and if it shifts normal you are done. If the transmission does not shift then the transmission oil and filter must be changed. Once this is done test the car and if it shifts you are done. If it still jerks you will have to take it to a transmission shop for their diagnostics.

Take it to a specialist, not just AAMCO. My 04 5.7 V8 hemi has 67k on it, shifts ruff, jerks, nothing wrong with tranny. Input speed sensor was malfunctioning, got car back, still shifts ruff. Went in, nothing, AAMCO, nothing just same check engine light and error code. Dodge was no help (BIG SHOCK THERE), they say the powertrain doesnt apply to me... Dodge hasn't made a believer outta me, AMF DODGE. Its been proposed its electrical, maybe input shaft locking up, input speed sensor malfunction, transmission computer. Who knows... don't reprogram or mess with anything yourself. Find a good shop that has 1 year parts and labor in writing.
