No, she always keeps her shield, even into Vampire hood. But another vampire teaches her how she can take her shield down momentarily, and at the end of breaking dawn, Bella takes her shield down for Edward so he can read her mind. :]

Because in Twilight she has a shield that protects her from all vampire she just doesn't know it and how to control it. But in Breaking Dawn (4th Book) when she becomes a vampire her special power is having that shield and controlling it and casting it over other people with. So she puts down the shield for a while giving Edward once to read Bella's mind.
