Officially, it was the German invasion of Belgium. Britain and Belgium had been allies for around 70 years when the war began. Additionally, since France and Germany had been enemies in the past, their border was heavily fortified on both sides, but Belgium's borders were not as heavily fortified. When the war began, Germany asked Belgium for permission to go through their territory; Belgium said no. So Germany did it anyway and conquered Belgium. No battles were fought in North America in WW2. The Germans did not get drawn into WWII by anyone. They were the main antagonist. Basically after Germany lost WWI the aftermath of that allowed for an extremist like Hitler to rise to power. Hitler and the German people were not happy that they lost WWI. They also were not happy with the Treaty of Versailles that Germany signed after the war ended. Amongst other things the treaty was going to take land away from Germany, make them pretty much completely disarm their armies, and pay a lot of money in reparations. Germany was very poor at the time and Hitler's small political party grew and grew, adding more and more members. There were a lot of politicians that did not like his views but he gained a lot of power very quickly. Obviously he ultimately rose to complete power and invaded Austria. The rest is history.
