Probably because they know exactly how expensive groceries have become. Perhaps they have larger families than you.
We know nothing about your work situation, but if you are looking for a raise, dropping hints won't work. Verify that the company is growing and in a good financial situation. Your boss and owner could be worse off than you.
Make a list of what you have done for the company and include how you have saved them money and increased business. Then ask for a meeting or review. Be prepared to have your request turned down.
