In 602 Khosrau II did not know he was going to seize Jerusalem. In 613 he came to lead a Persian-Jewish army due to a Jewish insurrection against the Byzantines across the Levant which begun during the Battle of Antioch in that year. These Jews joined the Persian forces. The Jewish revolt culminated with the conquest of Jerusalem in 614 by Persian and Jewish forces and the establishment of Jewish autonomy. The revolt ended with the departure of the Persian troops and an eventual surrender of Jewish rebels to the Byzantines in the year 625 (or 628).

It is claimed that the Christians were targeted, that some 55-65,000 people were killed and 35,000 were enslaved, including the Patriarch Zacharias, and that many churches (including the Church of the Resurrection or Holy Sepulchre) were burned, and numerous relics, including the True Cross, the Holy Lance, and the Holy Sponge, were taken to Persia. Jerusalem was handed over to the Jewish rebels, under the leadership of Nehemiah ben Hushiel and Benjamin of Tiberias,

A few months later the capture of Jerusalem there was a Christian rebellion against Jewish-Persian rule which spread across Palaestina. They allied with the Byzantines, Ghassanid Christian Arabs and descendants of the Judeo-Christians. Eventually, the Byzantines retook the city.

The archaeological evidence does not reveal signs of large scale destruction of the city widespread destruction of churches in this period or the that capture impacted population levels.
