He didn't resign, but was deposed and a new government set up. He was arrested on July 25, rescued by German paratroops, and tried to return as the head of Italy. On April 28, 1945 he and other Fascists were caught by Italians on Lake Como. They were put on "trial", shot, and their bodies exposed to insult in Como and Milan.
