Each manned Mercury launch carried a single astronaut. Gemini ... two Apollo ... three Shuttle ... several
The Mercury program started in 1961. There had been a total of six flight during this project. The last flight was on 1963. Astronauts aimed to go to space to make observations.
On 5 May, 1961 Alan Shepherd was launched on a sub-orbital flight into space aboard Freedom 7, the first manned mission of Project Mercury.

Only seven people were chosen for the Mercury program. Six out of the seven astronauts chosen had a Mercury flight. Deke Slayton was grounded because he had a heart problem (a heart murmur to be exact). He was able to fly as part of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. here are the seven mermbers of the Mercury program: Alan Shepard jr. Gus Grissom John Glenn Jr. Scott Carpenter Walter Schirra jr. The purpose of the Mercury program was to send man into space for the first time, orbit around the Earth, find out how a person functioned in space, and to recover the astronaut and spacecraft safely.
Project Mercury was the first U.S. human spaceflight program, running from 1959 - 1963. Its aim was to put a human in orbit around the Earth. This was achieved by the Mercury Atlas 6 flight on February 20, 1962.
