Mercutio taunts him.
Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt. Mercutio steps in for Romeo and fights Tybalt. Romeo steps between them, trying to stop the fight. Tybalt stabs Mercutio. Mercutio curses both the Capulets and Montagues. Mercutio dies. Romeo is enraged and decides to fight Tybalt. Romeo kills Tybalt, then he runs. Prince Escalus comes to the scene. He announces Romeo's banishment.

Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel. But Romeo refuses. Mercutio is horrified at what he thinks is Romeo's cowardice, and challenges Tybalt to a duel on Romeo's behalf. Romeo tries to break up the fight, and Mercutio is killed. Tybalt meanwhile has run away. Tybalt comes back (we are not told why) and Romeo attacks him. Romeo kills Tybalt. Romeo is now technically guilty of murder, and must leave Verona immediately. 'Oh I am Fortune's fool.' he shouts.

Romeo's friend mercutio ends up fighting Tybalt, and romeo attempts to intervene by stepping between them. Tybalt stabs mercutio, despite Romeos attempts to end the fight, and mercutio dies. Romeo and Tybalt then fight, and romeo kills Tybalt, and romeo is banished from Vienna. Merutio, romeo and Tybalt sword fight.
When Tybalt and Mercutio fight, romeo trys to defend Mercutio but ends up having him killed. Mercutio dies from Tybalt bringing the sword from under Romeo and stabbing Mercutio.

Basically they were spoiling for a fight. Tybalt was looking for Romeo in order to fight him, but Romeo didn't want to fight Tybalt. Mercutio didn't like Tybalt at all and was looking for a chance to fight him. He used the situation as a pretext to challenge Tybalt, who was not a man to turn down anyone's challenge.
Romeo knew that Tybalt wanted to fight him because Tybalt had sent a challenge letter to Romeo's friend Mercutio. Mercutio then informed Romeo that Tybalt was looking for him to seek revenge for crashing the Capulet party.
Tybalt Killed Mercutio and then Romeo was so cross he decided to kill Tybalt! =) x
