World War 2 ended on Europe on 8 May 1945, when the Allies accepted the formal German surrender. That day was called VE-Day, for Victory in Europe. Although this day was a celebration, for many people the war had not ended, because fighting in Asia and the Pacific against Japan continued into August.

Veteran's Day is commemorated on November 11. In the 1950's and 1960's it was called Armistice Day because that was the day that World War I ended. Officially the war ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Sometime in the 70's, I think, Armistice Day was renamed Veteran's Day.
