What is a metacentric diagram?

A metacentric diagram is a vessel (ship) stability diagram that shows the relative positions above and below the metacenter of the center of buoyancy and the center of gravity, respectively. Use the link to the Wikipedia article to view one and see how it looks. Follow along and see how it works. When a vessel floats in water, its center of gravity is below its center of buoyancy. That allows gravity to pull down on buoyancy from below the bouyancy to pull up on gravity from above (if it is permitted to say it that way). If the center of buoyancy slips below the center of gravity, the vessel will roll over. Visualize that. And the closer the two centers are, the less stable the vessel. That is, the more prone to rollover it is. The "sweet spot" between the centers of buoyancy and gravity is the metacenter. It's important in evaluating a ship's stability.

What happens when two balloons are wet and brought closer together?

Why fast moving vehicle has streamlined body?

Air resistance can be lowered by designing your "box" so that it slips through the air it is parting as it goes by. Just because it looks cool and fast that may not be the case. The back spoilers do no good at normal road speeds.

Can you give me an experiment to calculate the coefficient of static and dynamic friction?

Get a block of known mass, a protractor and a board; the materials should be chosen as those for which you want to find the friction coefficients. Place the block on the board and gradually increase the angle of the board while keeping track of the angle the board makes with horizontal. The angle at which the block slips is crucial. The friction force opposes the movement of the block based on the normal force applied on the block by the board. As you increase the angle, the normal force decreases. F = uN where F is the friction force, N is the normal force and u is the coefficient of friction, in this case, static. Using the angle at which the block slips, calculate N; N = m sin(@) where m is the mass of the block, and @ is the measured angle. Now F must be equal to the force of gravity pulling on the block parallel to the board, otherwise the block would slip (and it does precisely at the measured angle) so; F = m cos(@) where m is the mass of the block and @ is the measured angle. Now that F and N are known, use the aforementioned relationship to calculate u. This value should be non-negative and has no units. As for dynamic friction; let the block slide from the top of the board when it is at a high angle and gradually decrease the angle until the block comes to a stop on the board due to friction. This should be done in trials of larger degrees until a working angle is found, then more precise trials can commence. When such an angle is found that any higher angle allows the block to keep going all the way to the bottom, the same calculations as above must be repeated to find the coefficient of dynamic friction.

Which shapes are aerodynamic?

Sails on boats, wings on birds and aircraft, blades on wind turbines Hi Updated answer, The most aerodynamic shape for cars is the teardrop shape, you will find that most modern cars go into a wind tunnel, and turbulence on the body is checked. For example the wing mirrors are shaped to reduce drag. A sail on a boat is probably the totally opposite effect as it is designed to catch as much air as possible. An aerodynamic shape will not let the wind effect it. The wind slips over it, with nowhere to catch to slow it down.
