Dogs go in heat when they're ready to breed -- they don't have recreational sex -- and it's usually about a 3 week cycle. Some will breed with most anything, others are a bit more particular (and that shouldn't in any fashion be construed or paralleled with women generally).
If you're not dealing w/ a show dog or a purebred bloodline that you intend to "title out" and breed, have her spayed and everyone will be much happier.
Check the phone book and ask at least a couple of Vets and for their recommendations for low expense spaying.
They're driven by hormones w/o the benefit of rational thinking interfering.
