They are usually manipulated by the roustabouts during pipe changes or additions. Imagine a pair of grips that are at least 5 feet long and are tensioned by a winch operated by the driller on an oil rig "floor" . Most times a chain is used to do the initial tightening of the pipe joint but Tongs are needed for the final pinch up torques need to keep the keep the joint toght.
