A balloon has a set shape, well not if you buy a balloon that clowns use; but helium is a gas so it will only fill the shape it's given.

Why balloons are filled with helium?

Filling a balloon with enough helium for flight takes a lot of helium, hot air balloons only use hot air because it only takes a couple of tanks of propane to heat the air, which is much more cost effective than filling the balloon with helium. Airships use helium because they are used to stay in the air for extended periods of time, so it makes sense to pay for the helium to fill it once, rather than the propane to keep the air hot.

Explain why helium-filled Mylar-foil balloons can float freely for several weeks but latex balloons for less than 24-hours?

Helium is not only very light, it is also monatomic, it's particles are all made up of a single atom. Air molecules, oxygen, and nitrogen mainly are larger and hevier and diffuse through much more slowly.

How can you determine that helium takes up space?

There are undoubtedly some molecules of helium scattered around in the space between the stars and dust clouds, as there are atoms of other elements, but for all practical purposes space can be treated as a vacuum - a place where there are no atoms of any kind.

Does a gas have an indefinite shape?

it doesnt have a shape if youre talking about the liquid gas it takes the shape it is in

How many balloons will it take to pick up a 120lb person?

It takes about 300 balloons to lift 200 pound manballoon filled with exactly 1 sq ft of helium yields about 28.2g (upward thrust)453.6 grams/Lb453.6(1Lb) /28.2= about 16 blnsSo to get one pound off of the ground it would take about 16 balloons16x200= 3200it would take 3200 balloons to lift a 200 lb person....Only hoover not continually rise on account of the uneven weight distribution and the temp differences in each balloon helium isn't as buoyant when cold, unless the temp is consistant. Wind is a factor; as well as the amount of static charge in the air

How many balloons are necessary to make a balloon animal octopus?

5 is how many it takes to make a balloon octopus

How many balloons does it takes to lift 1 pound?

it took 53 12" helium balloons to lift a pound, you have to add the weight of the string and balloons

Just say you had a bunch of party balloons filled with helium tied to a person how many balloons would it take for a 150lb person to jump like they were on the moon?

well it depends how much the person weighs so do this take the persons weight and multiply it by five the divide it by how many inches the balloon is around then last but not least you add how much time it takes to blow up the balloon (this is because different heilium machines have different presure gages) and there is how many balloons it takes to lift a person off the ground wit regular party balloons

How many seconds does it take to pop a balloon?

Usually a matter of hours. But the question phrasing is important. If you fill a balloon with 'air' (O2, N2) then it will deflate much slower than a helium balloon will. Balloons deflate because the molecules escape through microscopic holes in the rubber and since helium is smaller than O2 or N2, it escapes much easier and faster. So a helium balloon will deflate in maybe 10 hours while an air-filled balloon could be around for days. Importantly, this all depends on what type of balloon is used. You will often see a shiny metal-like material used in helium balloons. This material is specially made to have incredibly small pores, so it keeps helium in much longer. So in summary, a balloon's lifespan depends entirely on what you fill it with and what type of balloon you use. Bigger balloons generally last longer due to a lower surface area-to-volume ratio. Keeping balloons cool will likely help their lifespan somewhat but will also cause them to appear deflated. A standard rubber balloon filled with exhaled breath will usually last about 4/5 days but it is entirely circumstantial.

Why does the air come out of the balloon?

The air in the balloon is under higher pressure than the air outside the balloon. It wants to equalize.

How long does a balloon decompose?

When you let go of a balloon the air that is inside of it makes it fly up.It is impossible for it to go up to space. If its without helium then it takes about 6 days.
