This is the best way I've found to turn someone down with out hurting their feelings. If they ask you to do something in several days, say that you already have plans that might change and you're not really sure if you're availalbe. That way, if you end up running into them, the 'Rejectionee', you can say that your plans didn't fall through. I use this one a lot. It works really well. If I have to tell them this several times, they invariably get the point.
