Advent Wreath. A band or circle of green foliage, surrounding four candles that may be enclosed in glass and are lighted successively in the four weeks of the Advent season. They symbolize the coming celebration of Christmas, when Christ the Light of the World was born in Bethlehem. The wreath originated in Germany, and in some countries there is a special ceremony, with prayers and hymns, associated with the lighting of the candles on the Sundays of Advent.

The candles are purple because Advent is a penitential season, but the third one is rose as the theme of the liturgy that Sunday is of joy.

A wreath of evergreen boughs with four candles lighted successively during the four weeks of Advent.

Originally a Lutheran custom that began in Germany in the Middle Ages and used by Catholics and Lutherans by the year 1500, the Advent wreath uses light to symbolize the coming feast celebrating the birth of Christ, the Light of the World. Popular in homes as well as churches, the wreath typically has three purple candles as signs of penance and one rose candle for upcoming joy. They are lighted at the beginning of the third week of the season, starting on Gaudete (Latin for "rejoice") Sunday. Since ancient times a wreath has symbolized victory. It also refers to the eternal love of God who has no beginning and no end. The green symbolizes our hope in God's never-ending love.

If you mean by lighting the candles, then the women don't have to do this. It is a tradition for them to do it, but not a requirement. Just like it's not a requirement for the men to cut the Challah and/or say the Kiddush, it's just a tradition.
