In England

the signing of the Magna Carta (1297) was the first official written acknowledgment that there were limits to the powers of a King.

This eventually resulted in Parliament evolving into a representational arm of the government, countering and balancing the power of the executive.

At first only the aristocracy... but eventually thru the commons, as well.

Also- the Great Freemasons strike against a papal decree that they could not live so high on the hog...

Just because they made a lot of money as masons. The Masons went underground and refused to build for many many years.

When the Pope relented, that was the first time in history that both the church and the aristocracy agreed that any man could live as well as his wits and industry allowed. For the first time you could LIVE like an aristocrat, even if you weren't.

This is the fundemental basis of society where its members are free to rise as far as their talents allow.

The Freemasons strike resulted in the close association of freemasonry and architecture with the Scottish enlightenment.

The founders of the United States were all masons because, at that time, being a mason was a political position... being a mason meant you believed in the rights of the individual over those of the state, and you believed in the essentail freedom from class.

How was Ancient Greek democracy different from democracy in the US?

Ancient Greek democracy was a direct democracy - those who had political rights could go to the assembly and speak or vote personally. Modern democracies are indirect or representative democracies - which means that citizens can have a say in the government through representatives that have been elected by them. The other difference is that women did not have political rights in ancient times.
