Australia, in the Southern Hemisphere, has the same 4 general seasons as the Northern hemisphere, except that they are always the reverse of the current season north of the equator. When it is summer in the US and Europe, it is winter in Australia. When it is spring in the US and Europe, it is autumn in Australia.

The cause of the seasons is the tilt of the Earth's poles either toward or away from the Sun. When the North Pole tilts toward the Sun, the South Pole tilts away, and when the South Pole is tilted toward the Sun, the North Pole is tilted away.

If you mark two "poles" on a ball (points on the top and bottom), you can see that only one hemisphere can be "toward the Sun" at a time.

However, not all of Australia experiences four clearly defined seasons, and for this reason, the "Top End" of Australia and the far tropical north are not regarded as having four seasons, but two: the 'wet' and 'dry' seasons. Late spring and throughout summer is the time when the monsoons move in, and the weather is hot and humid throughout this time, which extends from October to April. Winter is a dry season, and the most pleasant for travellers.

In Kakadu in the far north, the traditional indigenous people of Australia recognised six seasons, and these are still acknowledged today. To view these six seasons, go to the related link below.

Australia has summer, autumn, winter and spring, the same as other countries. The difference is that the contrast between seasons is not as obvious as it is in countries of the northern hemisphere, and it is more marked in the southern states.

Spring begins on the 1st of September and runs through to November, Summer is from 1 December to the end of February, Autumn is from 1 March to the end of May, and Winter is from 1 June to the end of August.

In the far tropical north, there are still the four seasons, but more obvious are the 'wet' and 'dry' seasons. Late spring and throughout summer is the time when the monsoons move in, and the weather is hot and humid throughout this time, whilst winter is a dry season, and the most pleasant for travellers.

In the far north, the traditional indigenous people of Australia recognised six seasons. These seasons were known by the indigenous people as Gudjewg, Banggerrang, hedge, Wurrgeng, Gurrung and Gunumeleng. To view these six seasons, go to the related link below.
