Originally from Central America, avocados are harvested in the Spring, but thanks to warmer more tropical conditions in various parts of the US, they are available through most of the summer. They do well in green houses so you may even see them in grocery stores throughout the winter. There are many varieties of avocados, but the ones that ship well (they are picked prior to being ripe) are the Haas, which is a smaller avocado but with a milder flavor, are so dark green they appear black. As they ripen, they turn deep blue making them appear even more black. These avocados are grown in California. The Fuerte, which is a larger avocado and has a slightly muskier taste, is light green deepening to a medium green when ripe and is grown in Florida.
