King Arthur was crowned king because the sword in the stone (not Excalibur. Excalibur was given to him by the Lady of the Lake but they are often confused) said "He who so pulleth this sword from this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England." and Arthur, serving as Sir Kai's squire at the time, forgot Kai's sword. he needed a new sword so he pulled the sword out of the stone, and was crowned king at that time. That is the legend. Most historians agree a man named Arthur existed but the original sources differ on precisely what role he had and indeed if he was ever a crowned king. The earliest sources suggest he was a great general who served a king, that king being Emrys Wledig (a.k.a. Ambrosius Aurelianus). As for the sword, it was often the custom to bury great men with their swords. Perhaps Arthur was retrieving his father's sword from his father's tomb.
