Most veterinarians work a semi-standard 30-40 years in practice before retiring. Some exit the career earlier than anticipated due to medical issues, particularly large animal veterinarians, and some stay on as part-time or semi-retired veterinarians for 50 years or more. Since the benefit packages for veterinarians vary widely from practice to practice, the number of years in the profession also vary widely.

Veterinary assistants can retire when they feel they are financially sound enough to do so. However, relatively few vet clinics can afford to offer retirement benefits to their hourly staff (assistants, technicians, receptionists, kennel staff, etc.), so it is up to the vet assistant to make plans and set aside money for retirement.

A rough average would be about 30 years, similar to other professions. However, there are a number of private practice veterinarians that work 40 years or more because they love their jobs and aren't ready to hang up the stethoscope.

There is no set retirement age for an equine veterinarian, and I have seen some work well into their seventies. However, equine veterinarians tend to retire somewhat younger than small animal veterinarians because they have a higher risk of being kicked, bitten and otherwise severely hurt by their patients. For all its bravado, a Chihuahua just can't match a Thoroughbred in the amount of damage it can deal out quickly. Generally an equine veterinarian will start to shift from general/emergency practice to something less physically demanding in his late forties to fifties.
